It is a synthetic phospholipid that has been shown to promote apoptosis in cells. It binds to the mitochondrial membrane, oligomerizes, and disrupts the membrane by forming pores that allow for passage of cytochrome c and other molecules. It also has been shown to have antimicrobial properties that are related to its ability to cause death of bacteria. The acyl chains of this lipid stimulate the production of reactive oxygen species and can cause DNA damage and lipid peroxidation.
